GUTS

The challenge GUTS partners are facing is how to reconcile economic development and accessibility of their cities with an improving quality of life, environmental protection and fighting climate change. Currently 31% of all air pollution is coming from transport.

The project tackles this problem through a pioneer approach, following the line of the Commission Directive on promotion of clean and energy efficient road transport vehicles (COM2007).

The overall objective of GUTS is to contribute to sustainable urban mobility in Central Europe, helping cities & urban agglomerations (public authorities, transport operators) to meet requirements for a greener environment.

The specific objective of GUTS is creating a strong institutional, financial & technological basis (practical guidance) for the development of sustainable and clean public transport systems for small size cities while focusing on the use of renewable energies.

The driving force behind the GUTS partnership will be local authorities and transport operators motivated to improve, define and implement strategies for PT conversion. Besides, knowledge institutions and representatives of the industry also play a crucial role in the partnership as providers of knowledge and expertise. The added value of working together will be the creation of a knowledge base in a comparative framework, capitalization on all existing results and promotion of economies of scale regarding technological development.

With the financial support from the EU ERDF Fund for an amount of 2.052.215 €, 8 institutions including public authorities, local and regional governments, knowledge centers and public transport providers from 7 European countries have gathered to develop European, national and local level recommendations to promote a joint definition of regional policies and governance models for future implementation during a cooperation of 3 years, from March 2010 to February 2013.
